Dr. Vernon Williams is the founding director of the Center for Sports Neurology and Pain Medicine at the prestigious Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, CA.

He was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan where he attended Corinthian Baptist Church and graduated from Cass Technical High School, where he was a 3-year captain of the varsity football team. Vernon developed an early interest in medicine and was accepted to the University of Michigan’s prestigious Inteflex Accelerated Pre- Medical/Medical Program, completing both his undergraduate and medical degrees in 7 years. While at Michigan, he was initiated into the Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and during his undergraduate years served as Assistant Dean, and Polemarch. He is currently a Life Member.

Dr. Williams received his Medical Degree in 1992, and residency training in neurology at the University of Maryland, in Baltimore in 1996. He then completed his training with an interventional pain fellowship in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Dr. Williams combined his long-time interests in sports and medicine by joining the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, where he has practiced for 27 years – and still provides for a wide range of neurological needs to his patients, including concussion prevention, treatment and management, neurological sports performance, and chronic pain management – focused on neuromodulation.

Dr. Williams became a contributor to U.S. News and World Report in 2017, covering a range of brain health, sports performance and chronic pain-related topics in the publication’s online Health Care/For Better section. He serves as the Team Neurologist for the Los Angeles Rams, and neurological medical consultant to local professional sports organizations, such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers, Kings, Ducks, Angels, and Angeles Sparks – as well as professional and elite athletes from across the country. He also works with several local college and numerous high school and youth sports/club athletic teams in this capacity.

He is a current (three term) Gubernatorial appointee to the California State Athletic Commission (currently serving as Vice-Chair) and former two-term Chair of the American Academy of Neurology Sports Neurology Section. Dr. Williams is a member of multiple professional medical societies including the American Academy of Neurology, the American College of Sports Medicine, the North American Neuromodulation Society, and the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. He has received numerous public accolades including designation as a Super Doctor in Sports Medicine and Neurology since 2016.

Dr. Williams is also a frequent medical expert and contributor to mainstream media publications and news outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, Sports Illustrated, ESPN News, Huffington Post, as well as local and national television news outlets including Ivanhoe National Broadcast News, CBS, NBC, and ABC television affiliates. He currently serves on the Peloton Health and Wellness Advisory Council and was recently appointed to the inaugural Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being by Gavin Newsom.

Dr. Williams, his wife Brenda Montgomery Williams, and son Brandon have a wide range of interests including music, travel, art, fine dining, and community service. He has been a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity since 2010 and serves on the Viscount Foundation Board.
