About the NRL

The National Rugby League is the Number One Sport in Australia and the Pacific.

The NRL is the world’s premier men's Rugby League competition comprising 17 teams (16 from Australia and one from New Zealand), as well as the premier women's Rugby League competition comprising 12 teams (including one from New Zealand) in 2025.

The Australian rugby league season also features matches with the Australian Kangaroos (male) and Jillaroos (female) representative teams, the annual three-match State of Origin series between New South Wales and Queensland, annual All Stars games and the Pacific Championships. In 2026, Australia and Papua New Guinea will host the Rugby League World Cup.

The NRL Telstra Premiership is Australia's most watched sport, with rugby league content attracting almost 200 million viewers annually on television and 5 million in person. The NRL has the largest social channel following of any sport in Australia and the Pacific.

At the elite level, the iconic State of Origin series is Australia’s greatest sporting rivalry and regularly ranks as Australia’s highest rating television program. At semi-professional, amateur and participation level, rugby League can be played in touch, tag or tackle formats.

Rugby League is the largest and most connected sporting community in Australia and the Pacific, with 48 per cent of NRL players having Polynesian heritage and 15 per cent being Indigenous Australians.
